Junior Music Festivals
(For current festival schedules, please check the Events page.)
In order to participate in a UVMTA Junior Music Festival, a student must be under the age of 19 or still attending high school and studying with an Active or Student Member. Current registration fees are $6.50 per festival which also registers a student as a Junior Member.
A Festival performance requires two memorized pieces of contrasting style to be performed for an adjudicator in a private environment. No teachers or parents may be present in the same room, but at least one or the other must be there to monitor the door. The practice rooms and/or offices at the Snow Building at BYU-I are the usual venue. The student is judged on technical skills, interpretation, stage presence, etc., and points are awarded accordingly.
There are four levels or grades: Beginner, Intermediate, Pre-Advanced and Advanced. A teacher may indicate, after registration, whether a student is early beginner, or late intermediate, etc.
Each UVMTA teacher is responsible for tracking their student's points and participation so awards can be given when earned. Current awards include pins, figurines, music boxes and gift certificates.
You may read the official UVMTA festival guidelines here.
